Girls

Australian Rugby Union is establishing a proud record in female rugby. In particular, our
Australian Women’s sevens team has excelled on the world stage in winning Olympic and
Commonwealth gold medals as well as World Championships.

Oatley Rugby Club is committed to the growth and development of girls’ rugby. Our Club boasts the strongest and most consistent girls’ program in the south of Sydney.

The Club’s first foray into girls’ rugby was in 2008 when the Club’s u/16 team won the SJRU
premiership. Unfortunately, this pilot program fell into abeyance.
We re-entered girls’ rugby again in mid-2019 when interest spiked on the back of the
Australian team’s international success.

At Oatley, we cater for girls specific rugby from age 11 years up to 18. Younger girls are
catered for in our minis program of u/6 to u/10.
The Club draws girls from not just the St. George/Canterbury-Bankstown area but from all
over south and south-west Sydney.
Like many sports, the Covid pandemic created a bit of a stop start delivery of our program,
but we have overcome this momentum pause to power on to achieve success at both a club
and representative level.

Playing girl’s rugby at Oatley provides pathway opportunities starting with Southern District’s
participation at State Championship level in both Sevens and XV’s. From there we have had
girls selected for Sydney and NSW teams.
We are particularly proud that Oatley’s latest international player Serenity (Keti) Mahoni. She
was introduced to rugby at Oatley in 2021. Last year Keti was selected to play for the senior
Tongan national team in the Pacific Championships at just 18 years of age.

The Club is equally proud of the large number of girls that we have introduced to rugby with
our focus being, ‘beginners to superstars – all welcome’.
Oatley’s girl program is conducted under the supervision of our Head Coach, Ross Bernays.
The Club considers itself to be truly fortunate to have a coach of Ross’s experience and
expertise directing the program.
Our girls train on Wednesdays at Riverwood Park at 6.30 pm and we encourage girls to
come along and give rugby a go.
